How does this Ford/Maserati analogy prove Android will win? A Maserati costs $100,000, a Ford costs $20,000. Price drives the consumption rate. On the other hand, an iPhone costs $200 and an Android costs $200. iPhones are better. The only reason for buying an Android now is you don't want AT&T. And that's about to change. And as you point out, Apple is smart enough to make that $30 iPhone. It's coming. If you can get a Maserati for the price of a Ford, you don't drive a Ford.

Your analysis is mostly spot-on. Apple will continue to make the Maserati of phones and Android will have the Taurus... and the Ferrari and the Porsche and the VW and the Corvette and BMW and Fiat and Mercedes... in short, choice in every segment. And THAT is why Apple can't win.

I've heard stories of love at first sight before however I never before experienced it myself before I laid eyes on the iPad. From the first day I owned mine, it has been an important part of me. I utilize it for work, play education for my young ones - everything. I can't imagine not having it. The point is - I think we are at the front end of discovering all that the iPad and the next generations of like technologies will bring to us. The power and flexibility will make new types of efficiencies and learnings available to all of us. I know there are a lot of iPad haters out there - you all just don't know what they're talking about!

Paul,
Another good report on a key subject of top line phone makers' influence over the industry as operator influence recedes somewhat, but not completely.

The iPhone has widely been reported to have "cratered" AT&T's network, but they are hiring the best people, and are spending ~$19B/year on CAPEX, not exactly chump change. Verizon is extremely high quality and I will never leave it but will it degrade in some proportion with rising smart phone data usage, iPhone or other brands?

Maybe this portents a new growth story for pico, micro and femto cells. Maybe investment in those areas is the real story here.
